When You Look Up At The Sky

Tully Rohrer

November 6th, 2006

Today marks a day of ambition in the life of Tully Rohrer. Those of you that know me know how much joy I get from listening to good music, and those of you that frequent the site know that the titles for many of my images come from songs. I am a big fan of the music blog revolution, and I’m going to do my part to add to that ever-expanding world. What does this mean for you, dear reader? This means that in the coming weeks, along with my images, I am going to start posting a song and a little write-up regarding why I love the song. I am strapped for time as is, so I can’t guarantee I will be able to do it every day, nor can I guarantee that my writing will be inspired or insightful. I do, however, love music and hope that I can introduce you to some new songs or artists or, at the very least, share some of my passion with you.

So, with that, the inaugural song is Andrew Bird’s Masterfade (right click, Save Target As). Bird is a classically trained violinist with a penchant for writing beautiful indie pop songs with layer upon layer of violin. His live show is among the best there is. It is nearly impossible to see him without your jaw dropping in awe of his ability and the simple disbelief that a human can do the things that he can do. Masterfade highlights his ethereal whistle, while pondering the benefits of “reducing” every wonder and mystery in the world to a simple scientific explanation. As I took this picture, the stars slowly revolving through the night sky above me, this song and sentiment seemed perfect. Masterfade is the 7th track from the album The Mysterious Production of Eggs, which I cannot recommend highly enough. (Mp3s are for sampling purposes only. If you like the song, support the artist and buy the album. Mp3s will be available for a week or so, and if you represent the artist and would like the link removed, let me know and I will gladly do so.)

Even knowing this song (and loving it) I played it with thie photo and got so much more out of it than usual. Thanks for the fun new facet of the site Tulls! I would totally have Andrew Bird’s babies.

Nice work Tully… You did it. You got a great night to do it… I am guessing one of the Santa Ana nights? The shot is really beautiful.. I will check out the song.

Looking at this image again, I just noticed the vertical stone, and that it looks like the number 1. Fitting for the image that accompanies your inaugural music post.
