Sleeping Is Giving In, So Lift Those Heavy Eyelids

This is a beautiful female sea lion on the shores of Seal Rock, on the east end of Catalina. She was exhausted from a full day of fishing, and had hauled out onto the beach for a nap. She was so tired that when we approached, she looked at us, checked us out for a few seconds, stretched, and went right back to sleep. The end result is some amazing closeups despite only a 55mm focal length. It was a pretty magical experience to be on a beach with over 65 other sea lions, including some positively massive bulls. This female was my favorite.
i cant believe you clubbed that poor baby sea lion for your picture, you are soooo out of the hippy club.
i was there for this amazing day at the sea lion rookery and this picture holds the magic that we were in the middle of. tully this is awesome!
What a fantastic capture! The color and subject matter are great…nice work.
Great color, and I really like your choice of angle and dof. I think it’s cool the way the composition is divided into the horizontal blues and greens of the sky and sea, the fuzzy brown seal and the round grey rocks.
